Another Virus Threat!! |
| |
A new
mass-mailing e-mail worm is spreading on the Internet, masking itself as a
message from Microsoft Corp.'s support organization.
The new worm is known as W32/Palyh, W32.HLLW.Mankx@mm and
W32.Sobig.B@mm and arrives as an executable attachment to
e-mail messages with a variety of subjects and messages. All messages
containing the new virus purport to come from the same
address, support@microsoft.com, according to alerts posted
by a number of leading antivirus software vendors.
Make sure
you have the latest virus definitions whether you are using McAfee, Norton
AV or any other. If you are not sure you have a virus checker on your

The final 802.11g wireless draft throttles data rate down |
| |
In order to assure backward compatibility with millions of existing
801.11b Wi-Fi devices and access points, The IEEE has approved on May
15th a new and final draft standard for 802.11g that will have a true
throughput between 10M and 20Mbit/sec,
far lower
than the 54Mbit/sec rate initially billed for the standard.
To ensure that the new 11g devices don't interfere with 11b devices, the new
system needs to transmit an electronic warning to 11b devices that an 11g
device is operating. Because both standards operate in the same 2.4GHz
frequency, this built-in protection mechanism is enough to cause a cutbac k
in actual throughput of the 802.11g devices.
In
pure 802.11g environment, networks will have actual data rates of around
20Mbit/sec. At those rates, the 802.11g devices still outperform 802.11b
with raw data rate of 11Mbit/sec but an actual throughput of about half that
speed.
Manufacturers such as Dell, D-Link, Apple, Intel, Broadcom and others are
promising users who already purchased Pre-Standard 802.11g devices
that new drivers will be available and that they need to download them in
order to make their gear compatible with the final IEEE standard.
The
WI-FI Alliance expects to start testing and certifying 802.11g products
in June. |
