  • Tomorrow's Threats
  •

In the past, security professionals have used the “wait till it affects us” approach in defending their applications and networks from the every changing threats and attacks. This approach has worked up till now, but with many struggles and heartbreaks. This approach worked because hackers were only “interested in intruding upon networks, cracking systems, and writing viruses and worms for the joy of the challenge or the mischievous thrill..”. (Information Week) Today, hackers are becoming the “profit-motivated mercenary. The profit to be made through identity theft, corporate espionage, or using hacker skills to attach business competitors will continue to rise.” (Information Week)

To continue the fight against these threats, security professionals need not only focus on their previous attacks. They also need to foresee what is on the threat horizon and arm their systems for impact.

To help understand what threats to expect, here is a look towards the horizon:

    Complex Web Attacks
Just last month one of the most complex attacks struck everyday web surfers by redirecting them to sites containing malicious code. The attack was possible do to a flaw within Microsoft Internet Explorer that has yet to be fixed and an OpenSSL flaw in open-source Apache Web servers. According to security experts, “..attackers will continue to devise multipronged attacks like this, which exploit several security weaknesses in software..” (Information Week)

    Spyware Threats
The treat of spyware is one of the fastest-growing internet threats and most computer users do not even know they have it. These spyware applications will continue to develop and become increasingly difficult to find and remove.

    Cell-Phone/Mobile-Device Attacks
This is the newest of the internet threats. Up till now all the attacks for cell-phone etc. have been considered a “proof-of-concept”. Even though they are considered a “proof-of-concept”, they have proven successful and destructive.

  • Are Your Mobile Devices Protected?
  • As the article above discussed, internet threats and attacks are constantly evolving and expanding. A good example is the newest Trojan attack on mobile smart-phones called “Skulls.” This Trojan was easily downloaded when unsuspecting cell users attempted to download a freeware program called “Extended Theme Manager.” Once the malicious code was installed it deactivated all links to Symbian system applications, such as email and calendar. It also replaced the icons with images of skulls.

With these threats now affecting cellular devices, it was only a matter of time before a mobile antivirus was developed to help keep our devices safe. Two companies, Symantex Corp. and F-Secure Corp, have already release their versions of the mobile antivirus earlier this year. Now Trend Micro is getting into the game by releasing their version and allowing smart phone users to download and use it for free until June of 2005. This release contains protections against mobile threats and does filtering for Short Message Service spam.

Security experts have acknowledged that even though there have been successful attacks, the mobile phone viruses and worms are in their infancy.

“(Todd) Thiemann acknowledged that the threat of infection through a mobile device is remote but said mobile device worms and viruses are likely to become more of a problem as a newer generation of phones with advanced networking and software functions is adopted by consumers.“ (ComputerWorld)

  • SonicWALL enabling business of all sizes to take advantage of affordable, enterprise-class network security and with the release of SonicWALL’s SonicOS 3.0, this has never been so true. The SonicOS 3.0 combines unified threat management features such as Gateway Anti-virus and intrusion detection and prevention with stateful inspection firewall and other enterprise-class features such as VLAN support, dynamic routing, Active Directory user authentication, and secure remote management capabilities.

The real-time Gateway Anti-Virus service is capable of concurrently scanning large numbers of files as well as files of unlimited size. It also provides support for multiple protocol types, scanning not only email traffic but all network traffic, delivering real-time virus protection for file, mail, Web and FTP servers. Combined with SonicWALL’s Intrusion Prevention Service 2.0, Gateway Anti-Virus provides powerful unified threat management to business of all sizes.

SonicOS 3.0’s 802.1q VLAN capabilities enable network administrators to deploy firewall, anti-virus and intrusion prevention at any point of the network including distribution, aggregation, core and gateway layers. With SonicOS 3.0, network security is no longer limited to physical ports on the firewall but is extended to the port density of managed switches. User and group policies can be deployed to secure mobile users as they access network resources from a variety of devices, while consolidated user management for local and remote access and policy enforcement increases security while decreasing administration costs.

“The introduction of SonicOS 3.0 brings powerful new capabilities to our entire installed base of TZ 170 and PRO series users, without forcing a hardware upgrade,” said Matthew Medeiros, president and chief executive officer at SonicWALL. “Two years ago, firewalls were able to prevent about 30 basic network attacks. Today, SonicOS 3.0 and our unified threat management offering allow SonicWALL to prevent some 30,000 dynamic threats covering both file and network-based propagation of blended attacks. This is an industry- leading capability that is affordable and easy to deploy and represents another compelling reason to deploy SonicWALL appliances.”

  • Secure Wireless for the President!
  • Reporting on the race for the presidency is demanding job not only for reporters, but also for the technology they use. In preparation for the first 2004 presidential debate at the University of Miami, the university realized this demand and deployed an Alcatel OmniAccess-powered network that allowed journalists in the Press Room to connect to the Internet to transmit, publish, and monitor news stories across the globe.

" The University of Miami realizes that journalists need a reliable telecommunications infrastructure to report their stories," said, Orlando Pimienta, Wireless Engineer at the University of Miami. "Our new Alcatel wireless network provided reporters with the connectivity, security, and speed required to efficiently file stories and communicate with their editorial teams."

In the beginning of 2004, Alcatel added the next generation Wireless LAN products to its range of LAN switches and IP-PBXs to deliver the industry’s most comprehensive, standards-based wired and wireless converged mobility offering. Leveraging its leadership in IP telephony, data switches built for mobility and convergence, wireless technologies and communication applications, Alcatel delivers more services and capabilities on fewer platforms and fewer infrastructures to access business application and resources anywhere and at any time.

According to Tom Burns, senior vice president and general manager of Alcatel’s Network Infrastructure business, "Our solutions are specifically designed for mission critical network environments like the University of Miami’s-where users expect secure, non-stop network access in order to do their jobs."
